Ingredients in a Naturally Organic Mattress for the Perfect Night’s Sleep

We know that organic materials share important earth-friendly characteristics, but did you know that each element in a naturally organic mattress is there because it has its own unique and beneficial characteristics, as well? Here’s a basic guide to understanding the ingredients in eco-friendly mattresses and how they will give you the best and healthiest sleep.
Organic wool is a mainstay in a good green mattress, and here’s why: Naturally flame-retardant, dust-mite resistant, water-repellent, and hypoallergenic, wool provides a protected sleep environment. Very resilient, and yet soft and springy, too, wool is also a natural insulator, extremely absorbent, and has self-cleaning properties.
Organic cotton often fills an organic bed (organic cotton batting is strong, supportive, and extremely durable) and encases it, as well. A cotton cover allows a mattress to breathe and provides the sleeper with the softest, smoothest, and strongest of sleep surfaces.
Organic bamboo, a newcomer to natural beds and bedding, is known for its anti-bacterial, deodorizing, insulating, and anti-static qualities. Soft and as lustrous as silk (but less costly), bamboo is hypoallergenic and wicks moisture away from the body very quickly. Like wool, bamboo is a sustainable resource.
Plant-based or Natural Latex Foams are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, hypoallergenic, and dust-mite repellent. Comfortable and durable, these natural foams come from sustainable materials. Read labels carefully when buying a foam mattress to be sure the product is 100% natural, with no harmful glues or chemicals added.
An Untreated, Sustainable Hardwood frame has no harmful glues or chemicals and is either unfinished or finished with an eco-friendly paint, stain, or oil. If you do apply your own finish, remember to choose a natural or organic product.
What Might the Future Bring?
What’s to come in eco-bedding and organic mattresses? More earth-friendly materials, made from hemp, flax, and corn. More types of organic fabrics, like cashmere, damask, jersey, suede, and cotton stretch. More options for the consumer, as the eco-bedding movement continues to spread its wings and move into more styles and locations (imagine organic mattresses and bedding in hotels!). And more luxury and convenience, too, in organic bedding so strong, soft, and delightful that it is sheet and mattress cover all in one.
Understanding earth-friendly mattresses means looking at things in a new way and making choices not only for comfort, but also for health and safety. As you educate yourself about the materials in eco-friendly beds, learn how to read labels so that you are buying what you intend to buy. By choosing organic materials, you can sleep deeply and soundly, knowing nothing on the planet was harmed while your mattress was made, and that you’ll be safe while you sleep, too.
